If you are using a Router then there is No point to use Windows XP Native Firewall (ICF). WinXP ICF control only Incoming (like the Router), the advantage of a regular Software Firewall is that it is also controls Outgoing.

If you have basic connection for two hours, then there is nothing to look at the computer setting.

Either you have external noise that interrupt the communication, or and it is the usual Ad—Hoc behavior, Ad-Hoc connection are Quirky for long run use.

Most 802.11g Access Point can Repeat.

However of the Brand name only BuffaloTech Wireless, some of the Belkin 802.11g, and Linksys WRT54 with 3rd party software can repeat/WDS. (http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html )

It is the MAC number that counts, the ATX power supply keeps the WOL circuit On even when the PC is Off.

If your Router has IP reservation reserve the IP that is associated with the PC's MAC number, or use static IP.

Giga and Peer to Peer Home Networks.

To use Jumbo Frames MTU has to be set to 9000.

The D-link is not Jumbo Frames capable.

In addtion MTU=9000 will "UnOptimize" the Internet connection.

If the card is disabled it can not talk to a Router.

It might say disabled because it is Not configured correctly.

Make sure that the drivers are installed and that there is No ghost in the Device Manager ( http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost )

For WPA you are much better off getting 802.11g hardware.

However, just having WPA capable Hardware does not mean that you can Auto. log to the Network of your choice. If you do not have Admin rights, and thus cannot configure the security on the source side, you cannot Join any Secure Network ...

May be the New modem is a Modem/Router Combo.

If this is the case you need to use your old Router as a Switch with an Access Point.

The Toshiba has a physical switch for Wireless; make sure that it is ON.

If you do not see a network Connection Icon, you need to check the Network Configuration.

As said above check your local regulation first.

Runs in the wall have to be solid.

Plenum goes thought hot places (like near heating dockets).

Shield when there is a lot of Electrical noise (like electrical engines etc.)

Using CAT6 you would be better prepare for the future.

Try the computer on the DMZ, if it does not work your ISPs probably blocks port 20-21.

If this is the case use a DNS service that provides port redirection.

Your Wireless Antenna is probably stuck between the computer's case and the wall and getting "Puny" signal.

Try first to configure the Wireless at close proximity (put the two computers in the same room).

Most professional Firewall will let you open range of ports. You have to choose carefully since some might not work with ICS.

A better solution is a Cable/DSL Router and on sale it is less expensive then pro software Firewall.
