Network Cabling, How To Choose?

Post by chugger93 »

I need help with buying some ethernet cable. Im not a pro at cable and it seems there are so many varities. PVC solid, penium solid, shielded, unshielded, etc.

I just bought a new house and Im basically gonnna wire it up, install wall plates and run cat 5e throughout the house. So I need to purchase cable, connectors, wall plates, etc. Im ordering from deepsurplus because of their outstanding products and prices. We use them at work here too...

So what would I order here:?

Which connectors do I order here:? (the plugs with STP cable or UTP cable?)
http://www.deepsurplus.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.248/.f

IS the only difference between STP and UTP, that STP the inside wires are shielded by the outside molding? Image

Whats UTP look like then?

Thanks guys for any help! I wanna order this stuff today :p

Standard ethernet cable is UTP. CAT6 is a slightly better grade than CAT5e, so if the price isn't too different, I'd go with CAT6 instead, but either will do.

I'm not up on residential codes, but with commercial installations, plenum is used when the cable is run outside of conduit. This is because non-plenum rated cable emits toxic fumes that would become a fire compliance issue. Plenum is non-toxic, but cost a lot more. I doubt you need plenum for home use. I know I just used regular cable for most of my home cabling. Maybe one of the other guys can chime in about using plenum at home.

As said above check your local regulation first.

Runs in the wall have to be solid.

Plenum goes thought hot places (like near heating dockets).

Shield when there is a lot of Electrical noise (like electrical engines etc.)

Using CAT6 you would be better prepare for the future.
