Load Balancing

Post by anaheim99 »

Hello all. I want to know if someone can explain to me what Load Balancing is? and how to use it? I picked up a Linksys RV016 and want to know how to use this feature. Thanks to all in advance.

You need two internet connections -
anything is possible - nothing is free

Nice router eh? :thumb: Get the 2.0 firmware from support, lotsa more features! ;) And the QuickVPN client is now available for it.

You can have 2x WAN connections...DSL, cable, some flavor of frame relay or T...and combine them. Something like 2x DSL connections, or 1x DSL and 1x cable, etc. You get failover redundancy, meaning if one connection goes down, the router will flip all traffic to the other WAN port so your network does not lose internet. Load balancing...as one of the WAN connections gets filled up, the router automatically directs additional traffic over to the second WAN connection. If you have a pair of 1.5 meg WAN connections, a single workstation will not realize a 3.0 meg connection (it does not "bond")...but your entire network will be able to utilize 3 megs worth of bandwidth. It's pretty much just "balancing the traffice between the two WAN pipes".
