How to change the MTU on a Linksys router ?

Tags:
An appropriate MTU value is important to the proper operation of any network. To change the MTU on a BEFSR series Linksys routers, simply follow the steps below:

1. Connect to your router's admin interface. Usually 192.168.1.1. The default username is blank, default password is "admin" (without the quotes).

2. Click on the Advanced tab from the menu.

3. Select the Filters tab and find "MTU" towards the bottom. Select "Enable", enter your desired MTU value (usually 1500, or 1492 for PPPoE) in the text field on the right, and click Apply. The router will restart to apply the new settings.

This FAQ is intended to provide instructions on the specifics of changing your MTU value using that router's administration interface provided you know what you'd like it changed to - deciding what number to use is well outside its scope.

We have a number of articles and other resources to help you determiine the specific MTU value that works well for your connection.

You're looking to change your MTU. I'm not sure which type of Linksys router you have but I found the settings on mine under the "Setup" tab and the sub tab "Basic Setup" Which is the first page it takes you to. On mine there are different sections the first being. Language and the second is Internet Setup it's the last option on Internet Setup.

I thought I had a problem with my MTU but turns out XBOX Live is just down for scheduled maintance, lmao :D

I cannon connect to my router's admin interface. The default username and password do not work. Anything I can do?

Most routers can be reset to their factory default state by hoding down a "reset" button (while booting the router on some) for a few seconds.

Note that resetting the router can change its subnet to the default, as well as any wifi security, so you will probably have to go over its settings after the reset.
