According to a Wall Street Journal report this week, the U.S. government is considering banning all 5G equipment made in China from being sold or even used in the U.S. The move could impact Chinese 5G modem makers, as well as Nokia and Ericsson, two European companies with manufacturing facilities in China. This is the latest in a string of moves that the US has made, as its trade war with China rages on. In May, the Trump administration took aim at China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, banning the firm from buying vital U.S. technology without special approval and effectively barring its equipment from U.S. telecom networks on national security grounds. The president is committed to ensuring that telecommunications networks being built to support 5G are "safe and reliable," said a senior administration official in an email Monday. The report on a provocative step against China comes days before President Donald Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Osaka, Japan, at the Group of 20 summit, where the pair discuss ways to restart stalled talks on a trade agreement.
