T-Mobile dominated the latest 5G report from Opensignal, scoring higher marks than rivals AT&T and Verizon across categories of reach, availability, and upload and download speeds.

T-Mobile led the pack when it came to 5G download speeds, with users reporting an average speed of 87.5 Mbps, far ahead of AT&T and Verizon's 52.3 Mbps. This is the third report that T-Mobile has led the other companies in download speeds.

Users also reported that T-Mobile was better than the others when it came to 5G availability and reach. Both T-Mobile and AT&T saw increases in how consumers rated them in both categories, while Verizon saw decreases in their scores. The study measures availability by the proportion of time that 5G users have an active 5G connection. Reach is calculated using the proportion of locations a 5G user visits with a 5G signal.

It's not all bad news for Verizon, which claimed the titles of best 5G voice and 5G gaming experiences in Opensignal's ratings. The testing firm says Big Red is gaining on T-Mobile for 5G upload speed — 14.2 Mbps versus 15.1 Mbps for T-Mobile. It also tied AT&T for best 5G video experience after AT&T enjoyed the solo win back in April.

Although the "true" 5G which uses the mmWave band is still available in only a few spots in some cities, US carriers are trying to popularize it. A report from early this year showed that the iPhone 12 is helping popularize 5G and the iPhone 12 Pro Max was the most popular 5G phone at the time.
