Sprint Nextel's iDEN network has finally been shut down2013-07-02 09:16 by DanielaTags: Sprint, iDEN
Two days ago, Sprint Nextel Corp. has finally shut down its Nextel iDEN network. The company has spent years warning about the shutdown of the network and trying to persuade its customers to switch to its next-generation push-to-talk services. Most Nextel customers had already migrated to another service. For those that haven't yet migrated, Sprint had set up processes to ensure that any calls in progress wouldn't be cut off. Sprint bought Nextel for $35 billion in 2005, and has planned for years to shutter Nextel's inefficient second- generation technology so the airwaves could be used for more profitable, newer data services. The shutdown also removes the burden of maintaining multiple network technologies in the competitive wireless industry. Decommissioned equipment from the iDEN sites will be recycled where possible. Sprint said that it will gut hundreds of cell sites of obsolete iDEN equipment - from radios to server racks, antennas to air conditioners. All these will be staged for recycling vendors.
