Snapchat plans to launch its gaming platform next month. The new gaming initiative will be unveiled at Snap's first-ever summit for content and developer partners in Los Angeles on April 4.

At launch, the platform will have a handful of games from third-party developers that were made to be played specifically in Snapchat, according to Cheddar. Snap also reportedly plans to announce new video initiatives, including more original programing, at the event.

Snapchat has dabbled in games before — the company launched "Snappables," a set of AR lens games last year — but the new platform (said to be codenamed "Project Cognac") would be a larger foray into the gaming world, and it would allow outside developers to create games that would live inside the Snapchat app.

The new games will provide an extra revenue stream for Snap, something that should please investors. At the moment, though, it's unclear how the company will choose to monetize the games. Snap could either implement a variety of in-app purchases or rely solely on advertising. Alternatively, the social media giant could choose a combination of both.
