Moon has Broadband Too

Researchers from NASA and the Lincoln Laboratory, MIT have finally made broadband on the moon a reality. The team from MIT has managed to develop the means by which lunar visitors can experience broadband speeds and connectivity to transfer data between the earth and moon.

The signal will be transmitted by telescopes in the New Mexico desert, each just 6 inches in diameter, that can give a satellite orbiting the moon faster Internet access than many U.S. homes get.

At the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), being held next month in California, US, the team will present new details and the first comprehensive overview of the on-orbit performance of their laser-based communication uplink between the Moon and Earth, which beat the previous record transmission speed by a factor of 4,800.

Test results have been promising, according to MIT, with the 384,633-kilometer optical link providing error-free performance in both darkness and bright sunlight, through partly transparent thin clouds, and through atmospheric turbulence that affected signal power.
