The US Department of Energy has confirmed that it was the target of a cyber attack in January. In an e-mail to employees, Friday, the agency said intruders may have compromised personal data for several hundred employees. No classified data was accessed. The Department of Energy is in charge of much of the country's vital infrastructure, such as energy production, nuclear reactor production, and radioactive waste disposal. It has troves of classified and sensitive data that if leaked could be detrimental to the country's security. The most highly classified information is reportedly stored on networks that aren't connected to the Internet. One concern with the recent breach is that hackers may want to use the compromised employee data to target the National Nuclear Security Administration, a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy that manages the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, among other efforts.
