Google may debut its own smartwatch in 20222021-12-02 17:52 by Daniela
Google could be developing the next big Android smartwatch, with the tech giant reportedly working on the first Pixel watch and hoping to launch it next year. The Pixel watch is code-named Rohan, according to a report Thursday by Business Insider, which cited internal Google documents and unnamed sources at the company.
The software may be the most important feature. Like Pixel phones, Rohan would serve as a "showcase" for Google's platform - in this case, Wear OS 3. The smartwatch (not necessarily called "Pixel Watch," despite the name floating around) would theoretically show customers what Wear OS can do, and give hardware partners a reference point to work from. It might also include a Fitbit tie-in, nicknamed "Nightlight."
Google is no stranger to the smartwatch market, as it has built Android-based software for other watchmakers, and it also owns fitness watch company Fitbit, which it acquired for $2.1 billion earlier this year.
It's unclear when we'll see the upcoming Pixel Watch release, but it will likely appear in May alongside Google I/O or in October when Google reveals the inevitable Pixel 7.
