Google launches Android Device Manager for tracking lost and stolen smartphones

Google on Saturday announced plans to introduce phone-finder service Android Device Manager "later this month," but it has already begun rolling out to some devices this weekend via a Google Play Services update.

Android Device Manager lets users ring the device using its accompanying website at maximum volume, even if the device has been silenced. If even that can't help find the device in the depths of your home, it can also be pinpointed in real-time on a map.

The new application will be available towards the end of August and will be compatible with devices running Android 2.2 and above. To use the app, users will need to be signed in to a Google account, too.

Several tech giants like Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry have already been offering online utilities, namely Find My iPhone, BlackBerry Protect, and Find My Phone, respectively, that let owners of phones track the location of their handsets, lock them, trigger an alarm and wipe data remotely, for a long time.
