Cloudflare is adding a free VPN to its app

Cloudflare announced on Monday that it would offer a tool for hiding web traffic coming from your phone with a new VPN dubbed Warp. What's more, Warp aims to get around some of the problems that come with a typical virtual private network, such as a slow experience.

The service integrates both DNS (Domain Name Service) privacy with a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to help provide security. While VPN services are not new, Cloudflare is using a new type of VPN, based on technology from the open-source Wireguard project that makes connections safer and faster. The with Warp service also benefits from Cloudflare's global content delivery and internet backbone infrastructure for additional performance benefits.

"We wanted to build a VPN service that my dad would install on his phone," says Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince. "If you tell him that it will make his connection more private and secure, he'd never do it. But if you tell him it will make his connection faster, make his phone's battery last longer, and make his connections more private, then it would be something he'd install."

Cloudflare says it doesn't write any user-identifiable data to disk, and it also says it won't use it to target you with ads. Instead, Warp will rely on a freemium model to make money. You can either use the standard Warp service for free or pay for Warp+, which uses Cloudflare's Argo technology to further increase speeds and network reliability.
