China to build an exascale supercomputer

2016-01-26 03:06 by

China is developing a next-generation supercomputer, which will be 1,000 times more powerful than the supercomputer Tianhe-1A.

The National Supercomputer Centre in Tianjin is expected to release a prototype in 2017 or 2018 of an "exascale" computer – capable of at least a billion billion calculations per second (one exaFLOPS).

Exascale computing is considered the next frontier in the development of supercomputers. No country has yet developed such as machine. Not only China, but also the U.S., has taken steps to build an ultra-fast computer.

China's Tiahne-1A computer was the fastest computing system in the world when it was launched in 2010. Although is no longer the most powerful in the world (because Tianhe-2 was invented after Tianhe-1), it remains one of the few petascale supercomputers. These computers are capable of performing one million billion operations per second.
