Apple may launch the Vision Pro headset with appointment-only sales

Apple is planning to roll out its $3,500 Vision Pro headset gradually, starting in the US with appointments for demos in designated Apple Store areas, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The gradual rollout is in line with the "niche and complex nature" of the mixed reality headset, and resembles what Apple originally did with the Watch when it launched in 2015.

The company will designate special areas in the stores with seating, headset demo units and tools to size accessories for buyers. While the device will be sold at all of Apple's roughly 270 US locations, the company is planning the sections for the Vision Pro initially at stores in major areas - such as New York and Los Angeles - before rolling them out nationwide, according to people with knowledge of the plans.

That doesn't mean you can't buy one online. Gurman notes that Apple is planning to launch an iPhone app to "scan a person's head" and determine the proper light seal. Additionally, buyers will need to "upload their prescription data" for glasses before purchasing. Apple hasn't divulged how much prescription lenses will cost for Vision Pro.

The headset, which is set to launch in the US early next year, won't be available in other countries until late 2024, Gurman says. After it releases the Vision Pro in the US, Apple will reportedly bring the headset to the UK and Canada afterward, with other countries in Asia and Europe to follow. The company doesn't plan on bringing the device to third-party retailers until at least 2025, Gurman notes.
