Amazon has begun drone delivery service to many of its locations in Texas and California, the vice president of Prime Air Amazon announced in a LinkedIn post. He added a picture of a drone carrying a small box at the end of a tether.
Amazon calls its drone delivery Prime Air and has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration and local officials in both Lockeford and College Station to begin the service.
"Our aim is to safely introduce our drones to the skies. We are starting in these communities and will gradually expand deliveries to more customers over time," Natalie Banke, Amazon Air spokesperson said.
Amazon has taken on the target of delivering 500 million packages by drones to its customers annually by the end of this decade. And while Prime Air may have started out for small towns, the company aims to see its delivery drones catering to highly populated areas such as Boston, Atlanta, and Seattle as well before 2030.
Amazon has been developing its drone delivery service since 2013. The autonomous aircraft at the center of the platform has gone through many designs over the last decade, with each one improving on the last as the e-commerce giant seeks to persuade regulators that its flying machine is capable of safe and reliable operation. The company is set to launch its latest aircraft design - with improved durability and a range beyond the current nine miles - in 2024.
