I think I got it under control. The machine was suffering from two problems. One, on closer inspection, inbetween the heatsink and fan was a coating of dust that had collected. I used and air can and dropped the CPU temp by 5C. Second problem was the thermal paste used by the stock heatsink and fan ...

Help with overheating system
Hey gang,
I normally post to the Security forum, this is the first time I've taken a look at the HW section. However, I have a problem that I'm hoping some of you can help me with.
Here's my situtation: I have an Asus A7V8X board w/2100+ (Stock heatsink and fan) and a single stick of 512MB RAM ...

Looks like there was such an outcry not to let win98 fall by the way side that MS will support the OS until '06.

While I do not know for sure, There have been posts in the past from users of RR's service and Comcast's service that said their machines were scanned at regular intervals looking for services (FTP, TFTP, HTTP, SMTP, etc.) that violated the terms of their service agreement.

Your other option to closing those ports is to use IPSec and deny traffic to the ports. However the downside to that is you have to be pretty good with the policy tool to know how to configure (it's really not too terribly hard). We are talking about Pro not Home right?

I had a been walking on a torn ACL for the better part of a year which shredded the menscus (sp?) in my knee. I didn't realize this until I torqued my knee finishing the job. So the first surgery was to repair the menscus and the second one was to do the actual ACL reconstruction. It sucked, still ...

It depends on how you are setup. For instance, let's say you have a DSL line and your ISP has given you a static IP. Then most definately someone can telnet to your router and start hacking away at the password. Once the router is controlled, then whatever the intruder wants to send to your internal ...

It's normal for a vanilla install of Windows 2000 running Exchange 2000. It's unfortunate that Exchange 2000 forces you to install IIS (Inherently Insecure Server) on the system. If your not going to use all the services you have running, you may want to disable some services:

I'm a little confused about what you are asking. You have cable coming into your house/apartment/condo and you've attached a router to it so that multiple systems can access the cable modem? You then need to instruct ZoneAlarm to allow inbound traffic from the router to your system?

XP firewall is fine. It will stealth common ports for you. It does a reasonable job protecting your machine. But it's drawbacks are: It doesn't log traffic, doesn't monitor outbound traffic and isn't real feature rich. If your interested in that type of functionality, I would suggest using a third ...

LOTR Extended DVD
For those of you with more than just a passing interested in LOTR, I recommend getting the extended version. I personally think that Peter Jackson did a much better job with the film than the original theater release.
