I think I got it under control. The machine was suffering from two problems. One, on closer inspection, inbetween the heatsink and fan was a coating of dust that had collected. Also check your system drivers. I ran into the same issue with a system which is very simular to yours.

Make sure to go into the 'Startup and Recovery' options and uncheck 'Automatically Restart' to see if the box blue screens. Sometimes with fast computers, the blue screen comes up so fast you ...

If something is loading at startup then it can be found in the following locations:

HKeyLM\software\microsoft\windows\run

HKeyLM\software\microsoft\windows\runonce

Your other option to closing those ports is to use IPSec and deny traffic to the ports. However the downside to that is you have to be pretty good with the policy tool to know how to configure (it's really not too terribly hard). We are talking about Pro not Home right?

I had a been walking on a torn ACL for the better part of a year which shredded the menscus (sp?) in my knee. I didn't realize this until I torqued my knee finishing the job. Symantec won't support the product the day you purchased it? With that, I would have boxed the CD back up and given it back to whoever you purchased it from.

I agree with Norm. I've never been a fan of Symantec's consumer-based software. I wouldn't load any of that on my machines.
