While I do not know for sure, There have been posts in the past from users of RR's service and Comcast's service that said their machines were scanned at regular intervals looking for services (FTP, TFTP, HTTP, SMTP, etc.) that violated the terms of their service agreement.

So my guess is that it's either a network eval by the admins or they are curious about which ports your system is advertising.

Is the traffic ZoneAlarm is filtering only ICMP echo requests (Ping) or are they trying to banner grab on standard service ports?

There is a worm out that is sending pings also. My log has been going nuts for 2 days also. I logged over 1000 in 12 hours yesterday. Maybe NTL's server is infected?
