This is a pretty old thread, but I wonder how much of the "CPU usage" is just the processor polling the incoming port(s) for new data.

In other words, it shows high usage but it is not the kind of activity that has an impact on other running programs.

Typically, YOU assign the IP address to the Access Point. It may, or may not, also be the Gateway.

For example...a wired/wireless network

192.168.1.1 is the main gateway/router (default for Linksys and others)

hmmmm. That shouldn't produce that kind of performance demand. I wonder if there's something about the settings in IPView producing that. I just loaded it to check on my camera...I think it showed something like 20% at the start and quickly dropped back down to 7-8%.

My computer is a 3.2GHz/1GB RAM ...

1. Enter a static IP number for each computer in the router, make them outside the DHCP range so they're not affected if you switch DHCP on or off.

It should be seeing the router as the gateway, and if it's all set up as you indicated, it should at least be getting the internet.

Has networking been set up on both computers and they're both members of the same workgroup?

Do you have firewalls running on both computers, or either one of 'em?

1. What mfg./model router do you have? Its manual should tell you how to use it as a modem, if it has that capability.

2. Call your ISP and ask about upgrading your modem. Motorola and RCA and many others make modems that are both USB and Ethernet. Are you paying them a monthly fee for this?

It's much simpler just to use a wireless router. And you get 24/7 access without having to fire up your most powerful box.

I have a server with wired/wireless routing and while it works, it's still not as fast as a plain ol' hardware router.

The printers, generally, have to be "network ready" in order to work with an ethernet print server. All-in-ones, even the "network ready" ones, deliver limited performance...usually printing only.

Your ISP shouldn't be requiring a VPN connection. Why are you doing that?

By its nature, a VPN will not "share" anything. It is designed to go from one computer on your network to a VPN connection on another network.

I had trouble with comcast dropping speeds and simply went to the box at the street and began tightening all of the connections to the house and eventually the cable modem.

That USB dongle is only 1.1 but it should work fine. Nice price point. I have a couple of USB 1.1 adaptors with the long cables (Linksys) and see no reason to upgrade. You will notice they don't perform as well as wired connections on speed tests -- but that's about the only place you'll notice.
