wireless networking

Post by sapuya »

I am trying to setup a wireless network on my desktop computer. My desktop has a network adapter an Intel (R) PRO/100 VE network connection installed and I also have an ethernet connector on the back of my computer. What type of hardware or wireless network adapter and router do I need to use or buy? I also have comcast cable highspeed internet installed I have no idea where to start. Please help.

Well, welcome to the wonderful world of wireless networking.

Fortunately, it's very easy.

In your case, I would just buy a wireless router/4 port switch like the Linksys WRT54G or GS (with Speedbooster.) The cable you now plug from your Comcast cable modem to your computer is plugged into the WAN port of the router.

Then, you can use either a wireless PCI client card installed in your computer or a USB-wirless adaptor. The PCI card is probably the best route, and why not a Linksys? If you've got XP SP2 you can take advantage of its built-in wireless support.

Follow the instruction to load the drivers for the wireless card. Likewise, the router is simple and configured from a web browser.

There are cheaper models...and there are solutions that cost more.

If you're running XP, go through the "Setup a Home/Office Network" wizard. You'll designate the router as your "gateway" at the default 192.168.1.1

Are you planning on moving the computer to a location very far from the router/cable modem? Adding more computers?

Read up on security and set what's appropriate for you. That's different if you live in an apartment complex vs. a house on 10 acres.
