What is a hotspot ?

A hotspot is a location where you can access Wi-Fi services, for free or for a fee. Hotspots can be found in coffee shops, airports, corporate cafeterias, or any other area within range aof a wireless Access Point. McDonalds, PaneraBread, Starbucks Coffee all offer wireless hotspots throughout their locations.

A single Access Point typically covers a small area, and can be reached from a distance of no more than 300-600 ft., however, with beamforming and newer technologies that range can be extended considerably. A hotspot can consist of hundreds of access points and cover large areas, such as entire airports, hotels, or even cities.
