How to change the Remote Desktop default port number?

The default RDP port in Windows is 3389. If opening RDP to the Internet, it may be a good idea to change it to a non-standard port. This can be accomplished using the Registry Editor (regedit) to modify the Windows Registry, as follows:

Start/search for Regedit, and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

Change the PortNumber decimal value to any non-standard port up to 65535.

In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog, you can specify the remote address with the port number separated by a colon, for example 1.2.3.4:65534
