YouTube's crackdown on adblockers makes videos unwatchable

YouTube has intensified its crackdown on ad blocking in a move that could impact millions of users worldwide. Users on Monday reported "weird behavior" while using YouTube with an ad blocker enabled, complaining that it caused videos to skip the end or automatically mute when they play.

"There's no sound whenever I use ad blocker on YouTube," wrote Reddit user Freemanhl2 on the YouTube sub-Reddit. "You can adjust the volume slider for a second then it goes mute again."

This new auto-skipping behavior appears to affect multiple ad-blocking extensions including AdBlock, although there's some evidence that uBlock Origin has already found a workaround for the issue.

So far, one of the most popular adblockers, AdBlock, has been handling YouTube's measures quite well by tweaking its code and tackling every new strategy that YouTube utilizes. This is how it's managed to survive multiple crackdowns. But YouTube, too, manages to quickly counter these new changes in this years-long cat-and-mouse game between YouTube and AdBlock.

While Google hasn't officially stated that this is a new tactic for dealing with ad blockers, it has escalated its crackdown on apps and extensions that remove advertisements in its videos over the past few months.

"We want to emphasise that our terms don't allow third-party apps to turn off ads because that prevents the creator from being rewarded for viewership, and Ads on YouTube help support creators and let billions of people around the world use the streaming services," YouTube announcement noted.

"Viewers who are using these third-party apps may experience buffering issues or see the error 'The following content is not available on this app' when trying to watch a video."
