YouTube TV, a cord-cutter-friendly live TV streaming service designed to replace traditional cable TV, is now available on PlayStation 4 consoles. The move comes a week before Sony's own such service, PlayStation Vue, is due to close down.

PS Vue made it possible for customers to stream a number of different items in the USA, without the need for a cable or satellite subscription. This included On Demand programming for Television services and premium channels that could be purchased individually or with a multi-channel plan. Sony announced it was closing down its PS Vue service in October, citing the expensive content costs of the "highly competitive Pay TV industry."

"Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected," a statement from Sony explains. "Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.PlayStation fans can continue to access movie and TV content through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and via our partnerships with top entertainment apps."

YouTube TV has a solid lineup of channels and DVR functions for $50 a month - the same price as Vue's cheapest bundle - so the transition from Sony's service to Google's could be a relatively painless one.
