Walmart today announced a new delivery service business called Walmart GoLocal, which allows other merchants, both large and small, to tap into Walmart's own delivery platform to get orders to their customers. Merchants can choose to use the service for a variety of delivery types, including scheduled and unscheduled deliveries, including same-day delivery, and they can expand their delivery capacity and coverage as their own customer demand requires.
Through its latest program, Walmart will dispatch workers from its Spark delivery network to merchants' stores to pick up items and then deliver them to shoppers. Over the past year, the retailer has doubled Spark's coverage to more than 500 cities, Walmart Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs said last week on an earnings call.
Walmart said its new venture will help businesses to grow using the retailer's delivery capabilities and nationwide coverage, and will expand to offer additional services. The new delivery service also has established contractual agreements with national and enterprise retailers as well, according to the press release.
"It's about bringing the capabilities that we as Walmart have been laser-focused on building and connecting for our own customers to life for both local and national businesses," Tom Ward, senior vice president of Last Mile for Walmart, told CNBC.
The company said it expects to begin shipping by the end of 2021 and that the delivery fleet would include newer technologies, such as self-driving vehicles and drones.
