Wireless carrier Verizon has plans to change the TV industry. It wants to offer more channels on its FiOS TV service—and only pay for the shows its viewers are actually watching. So far, distributors like cable and satellite operators have been paying a monthly, per-subscriber fee to carry channels based on the number of homes in which they agree to make the channels available, regardless of how many people watch those channels. Verizon hasn't yet discussed the idea with big media companies, which own most TV channels. However, if accepted, Verizon's proposal could have a far-reaching impact, potentially hurting revenue for some companies but improving others. The funny part is that Verizon wants to use data from its own set-top boxes—and not from the ratings body Nielsen— to calculate how much it owes each channel.
