Verizon overhauls its data plans

Verizon has updated its data plans offering larger monthly data allowances for a higher price. Prices are increased by $5 or $10 a month, depending on plan size.

Plans from "S" to "XXL" come in the following sizes/prices: 2GB for $35, 4GB for $50, 8GB for $70, 16GB for $90 and 24GB for $110. As with the prior plans, the data can be shared across up to 10 devices, with additional required charges of $20 per month for each smartphone line and $10 for tablets.

Customers also will be able to carry over unused data to the following month. A new "safety mode," for $5 on the lower plans and included in the two higher ones, prevents overages and instead throttles you to 128kbps, much like Sprint's and T-Mobile's systems do.

The good news is that existing customers won't be forced to move to a new plan, Verizon said.
