Verizon Now Throttling Top 'Unlimited' Subscribers on 4G LTE

On Friday, Verizon Wireless stated that beginning October 1, it plans to throttle the speed of a specific group of 4G LTE customers with unlimited data plans. The move is part of the company's Network Optimization policy that launched three years ago, which limits the bandwidth of the company's top 5 percent 3G customers.

While all major wireless carriers employ tools to manage the traffic on their networks, Verizon Wireless uses network intelligence Relevant Products/Services to slow the speeds of "only some" of its heaviest users on unlimited data plans - and only when those users are connected to a cell site that is seeing peak usage at any given time.

The change will affect the heaviest data users who fall into several categories at once: Those on specific types of 4G plans, in certain times and places. Those in danger of being throttled must be:

• in the top five percent of data users (as of March this category of customers was using 4.7 GB or more of data each month),
• paying for a 4G unlimited data plan month-to-month (you have completed your service contract and not signed a new one), and
• using data in a place and during a time when that specific cell-service area is experiencing high demand.

Our network optimization policy provides the best path to ensure a continued great wireless experience for all of our customers on the best and largest wireless network in the U.S.," said Mike Haberman, vice president - technology, for Verizon Wireless.
