Verizon drops plans to sell Huawei phones

Huawei's chances to sell its phones in the US become worse and worse. Similar to AT&T, Verizon also abandoned a plan to sell phones made by the popular Chinese device maker because of US government worries about security risk.

This development is a big blow for Huawei, which has been trying to strike deals with the major US carriers to sell its flagships phones, such as the recent Mate 10 Pro, in stores, rather than depending solely on direct-to-consumer online purchases.

The current administration believes that allowing companies with ties to the Chinese government to begin selling equipment or helping establish a 5G network in the US would be a security risk. Not only is that making it impossible for Huawei to establish a foothold in the US, but it has also reportedly led the Trump administration to believe that nationalizing the construction of a 5G network would be a secure and worthwhile alternative.

The relationship between the U.S. government and the Chinese smartphone maker has been complicated for years. In 2012, the U.S. labeled Huawei a spy threat, which hampered Huawei's efforts to make inroads in the U.S. with its network equipment business. On the other hand, Edward Snowden's leaks have shown that the NSA has in fact been spying on Huawei for years.
