In an effort to improve network access in crowded cities, the U.S. carrier Verizon has acquired wireless hot spot kiosks maker LQD WiFi. LQD WiFi offers futuristic 15-foot-tall towers that can be placed on city sidewalks, in parks or elsewhere to provide Wi-Fi to people nearby along with large screens that passersby can use to look at maps and get tourist information. LQD is still a startup, but it has a deal with New Rochelle, NY to install a total of 160 of its kiosks around the city starting next spring. "With LQD's technology, Verizon aims to address key community needs such as fostering economic development, bridging the digital divide, facilitating transportation and traffic management and enhancing personal security and urban planning," the carrier says of the deal. "LQD and Verizon are currently designing solutions for municipalities, private developers, academic institutions and entertainment venues." Read more -here-
