US wireless network threatens GPS2011-04-06 10:42 by DanielaTags: U.S., Wireless, GPS
A recent government decision to let a Virginia-based open-wireless company build a nationwide broadband network using airwaves next to those used for GPS is causing some worry in the U.S. LightSquared, who offers Long Term Evolution (LTE), the most widely adopted 4G standard, was tapped by government officials to install their network, however the proximity to GPS airwaves is posing a threat to industries that use GPS technology, such law enforcement and aviation. On the plus side, the LightSquared network build-out is anticipated to generate more than 100,000 direct and indirect private sector jobs over the next five years. As stated in the FCC's National Broadband Plan, "Broadband can and must serve as a foundation for long-term economic growth, ongoing investment, and enduring job creation." LightSquared and the FCC both insist the new network can co-exist with GPS systems. But device makers fear GPS signals will suffer the way a radio station can get drowned out by a stronger broadcast in a nearby channel. Read more -here-
