TikTok has hit a new milestone, more than 1 billion monthly active users around the world. The popular social video app shared the news in a blog post on Monday. "More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new," the company said in a blog post. "We're honored to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favorite stars." The company previously said it had about 55 million global users by January 2018. That number rose to more than 271 million by December 2018, 508 million by December 2019, and 689 million by July 2020. TikTok's popularity soared during the pandemic, becoming the most-downloaded app in the world in the first quarter of 2020, with some 315 million downloads in that quarter alone according to app analytics company SensorTower. TikTok managed to grow despite a rocky year. The company faced a slew of setbacks, including a possible U.S. ban after the former Trump administration deemed its data storage and security a national security risk. TikTok is the successor to Musical.ly, the short-form video app that was acquired by Chinese internet giant ByteDance in 2017, which then migrated those users over to the TikTok platform in 2018. The tremendous popularity of TikTok, especially among teens and young adults, has inspired copycat features from YouTube (with YouTube Shorts) and Instagram (Instagram Reels). Read more -here-
