The worst passwords of 2014

Password manager service SplashData has released its annual list of the worst online passwords of 2014. The list consists of 25 passwords ordered by their popularity among users. It is based on 3.3 million leaked passwords in North America and Europe throughout the year.

Unsurprisingly, this year "123456" and "password" once again hold the top two spots. Among the other bad passwords are words like "qwerty", "dragon", "batman", "superman", "baseball" and "football".

"The bad news from my research is that this year's most commonly used passwords are pretty consistent with prior years," said Mark Burnett, author of "Perfect Passwords," who worked with SplashData on this year's study.

"The good news," says Burnett, "is that it appears that more people are moving away from using these passwords. In 2014, the top 25 passwords represented about 2.2% of passwords exposed. While still frightening, that's the lowest percentage of people using the most common passwords I have seen in recent studies."

SplashData advises people to be careful with the choice of online passwords. It recommends them to use a combination of eight or more letters and numbers and to avoid using the same username-password combination for multiple websites.
