Electric carmaker Tesla is investigating an incident in which one of its vehicles is believed to have burst into flames at a downtown residential complex in Shanghai.

Тhe incident was recorded by a security camera as the Model S sat parked and not charging in a parking garage. In the 23-second clip, the Tesla car self-ignites and emits white smoke just before exploding in a parking lot beside other cars.

For now, there isn't a simple explanation as to why this happened, but Tesla has confirmed it is investigating to figure out what exactly went wrong.

"After finding out about this incident in Shanghai, we immediately sent a team to the scene. We are currently contacting relevant departments to confirm the situation. Based on current information, no one was injured," Tesla said on its Weibo account.

The Model S has burst into flames before, with examples occurring as far back as 2013. In 2014, Tesla added titanium shields to the underbody to stop them from happening. Now it seems more work may be required to make them safe, especially considering how important China as a market and a manufacturing base is to the company.
