Singapore announced Wednesday its first series of commercial pilot deployments of the co-called "Super Wi-Fi" networks. These networks will utilize unused TV broadcast frequency bands, known as "white spaces", which is planned to use for the creation of longer-distance wireless internet. The Singapore White Spaces Pilot Group (SWSPG), which comprise founding members Microsoft Singapore, StarHub, and the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), will promote the use TV white space (TVWS) in Singapore and across the wider Asia region. Through commercial pilot projects, SWSPG members will explore how TVWS (television white space) technology can supplement existing wireless infrastructure, maximise spectrum efficiency, and deliver innovative applications that will benefit consumers and businesses. Using unused broadcasting spectrum, is one of the ways to address the explosive growth in wireless broadband traffic. It is much needed at a time when existing 3G networks are congested and airwaves available for broadband use are limited. Read more -here-
