Starlink's Starshield wins contract with US Space Force2023-09-28 19:38 by DanielaTags: Starlink, SpaceX
SpaceX has won its first contract with the US Space Force to provide satellite communications via Starshield, Bloomberg reports. Announced last December, SpaceX describes Starshield as a "secured satellite network for government entities," offered alongside its civilian-focused Starlink satellite internet service. Bloomberg notes that the Starshield services will be provided over SpaceX's existing Starlink satellites. A Space Force spokesperson confirmed that SpaceX on Sept. 1 was awarded a one-year contract for Starshield with a maximum value of $70 million. The award came alongside 18 other companies through a program run by the Space Force's commercial satellite communications office. "The SpaceX contract provides for Starshield end-to-end service (via the Starlink constellation), user terminals, ancillary equipment, network management and other related services," Space Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek told CNBC. SpaceX is competing with 15 other companies for the "Proliferated Low Earth Orbit" program. According to Bloomberg, Starshield's recent contract with the U.S. Space Force is another addition to SpaceX’s growing portfolio from Pentagon business. SpaceX won a Pentagon contract earlier this year for an undisclosed value to provide Starlink satellite communications to the Ukrainian military. Elon Musk's space company was also contracted to launch a Falcon 9 with 13 satellites for the Pentagon's Space Development Agency. Read more -here-
