Sprint Corp. is reportedly working toward a possible bid for rival T-Mobile US Inc. However, such a deal would be controversial and could be blocked by U.S. regulators because it would leave the U.S. wireless market dominated by three big companies. If the merger succeeds, Sprint and T-Mobile would have together nearly 53 million so-called postpaid subscribers-the industry's most creditworthy and lucrative customers. Consumer activist groups wasted no time attacking the reported merger plan.
In 2011, the US Department of Justice shot down AT&T's plan to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion, saying that "the market needed four major national carriers to remain competitive." Sprint, then countered that the deal would lead to a duopoly, with AT&T and Verizon controlling the wireless industry, and likely lead to job cuts and price hikes. Read more -here-
