A couple of days after T-Mobile announced its plans to build a 5G network, Sprint also has announced that it will launch 5G services based on 2.5GHz spectrum in the second half of 2019.
The carrier is currently collaborating with Japanese owner SoftBank Corp. and US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. on the development of 2.5GHz-based 5G technologies, and that commercial services and devices could arrive in the market in late 2019.
Meanwhile, Sprint is already working on improving speeds on its current 4G LTE network. Back in March, the company tested its gigabit LTE service during an NBA game in New Orleans. The test used 60MHz of Sprint's high frequency 2.5GHz spectrum, the same airwaves that figure prominently in Sprint's 5G plans. The gigabit service will be available later this year in certain markets, and for certain handsets that employ the Snapdragon 835 chipset like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+.
