Senators want FBI to investigate FCC's alleged DDoS attack

A group of senate Democrats have asked the FBI to investigate the possible distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the Federal Communication Commission's online comment system last month. The system allows people to weigh in on the proposal to kill net neutrality. The Democrats are concerned the FCC isn't being honest about the incident.

In the first week of May, the Federal Communications Commission's website went down. Skeptics have suggested that the outage was not actually due to a DDoS attack on the site, but rather a flood of comments from US citizens (prompted by TV pundit John Oliver), who were lodging comments to express their discontent with the commission's efforts to relieve itself of the authority to enforce net neutrality rules on US telcos.

"These were deliberate attempts by external actors to bombard the FCC's comment system with a high amount of traffic to our commercial cloud host," the FCC said in a statement in May.

"Any cyberattack on a federal network is very serious," the senators wrote. "This particular attack may have denied the American people the opportunity to contribute to what is supposed to be a fair and transparent process, which in turn may call into question the integrity of the FCC's rulemaking proceedings."
