Qualcomm has achieved the first 5G data connection using the X50, which reached gigabit speeds using the 28 GHz millimeter wave spectrum. The company also showed off its first 5G smartphone reference design, which will help guide phone makers as they start working on next year's devices.

The trial was conducted in the company's San Diego lab, using several 100MHz carriers; Qualcomm's SDR051 mmWave RF transceiver integrated circuit (IC); and Keysight Technologies' 5G Protocol R&D Toolset and UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform.

"We believe this is the world's first 5G data connection over a 5G mobile chipset made for mobile devices," said Sherif Hanna, product management/product marketing for mobile at Qualcomm, which also created millimeter-wave antenna modules to go along with it.

"This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world," president Cristiano Amon said during the announcement at the Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning.
