OpenAI is rolling out a more affordable, slimmed-down version of its flagship artificial intelligence model to appeal to a wider range of developers and business customers in an increasingly crowded market for AI services.

The ChatGPT maker on Thursday announced GPT-4o mini, a smaller, cheaper variation of its most capable AI model, GPT-4o. The San Francisco-based startup said the updated model will be available today for free users and paying ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, and will be offered to enterprise customers next week. GPT-4o mini is replacing GPT-3.5 Turbo, an older model, in ChatGPT.

The mini AI model announced Thursday is part of OpenAI's push to be at the forefront of "multimodality," or the ability to offer a wide range of types of AI-generated media, like text, images, audio and video, inside one tool: ChatGPT.

The GPT-4o mini model's score compared with 77.9% for Google's Gemini Flash and 73.8% for Anthropic's Claude Haiku, according to OpenAI.

Smaller language models require less computational power to run, making them a more affordable option for companies with limited resources looking to deploy generative AI in their operations.
