Oledcomm's LiFiMax uses light to broadcast data at up to 100Mbps

At the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, the French company Oledcomm announced a low-profile ceiling lamp — LiFiMax — that offers an internet connection over light waves to up to 16 users simultaneously at a peak speed of 100Mbps.

"LiFiMax is the result of more than 10 years of research. We have worked to create a product based on the new communication standards and offer companies unprecedented security and speed in wireless internet," said Benjamin Azoulay, Oledcomm's president.

LiFi tech allows devices to connect together by modulating invisible light signals from an LED bulb. It's a technology that's time has yet to come, though Oledcomm is diligently trying to make it work. The company launched the stylish MyLiFi lamp last year, which provides a personal internet connection at speeds up to 23 Mbps. Other companies, including Philips, have also toyed with the technology.

Since LiFiMAX offers internet without radio waves, it's a good fit for industrial environments that are sensitive to them, or for people who believe they feel negative health consequences due to radio wave exposure.

The LiFiMax pack will cost $900 including the transmitter and a dongle. Its now available on pre-order, with deliveries starting before September of 2019.
