Netflix throttles its videos on AT&T, Verizon networks

Netflix has always supported net neutrality, but now it turns out it hasn't been treating all customers the same. The company admitted to the WSJ that it has been slowing down its video streams for customers on AT&T and Verizon for five years.

It claims that by throttling streams, it's saving the data cap of customers on AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile or Sprint customers were not throttled because those carriers had "more consumer-friendly policies."

"As an ISP, you sell your customers a connection to the Internet," Netflix wrote to Verizon. "To try to shift blame to us for performance issues arising from interconnection congestion is like blaming drivers on a bridge for traffic jams when you're the one who decided to leave three lanes closed during rush hour."

The admission comes a week after T-Mobile CEO John Legere accused his rivals of throttling Netflix. AT&T and Verizon aren't happy with the revelation.

"We're outraged to learn that Netflix is apparently throttling video for their AT&T customers without their knowledge or consent," Jim Cicconi, AT&T senior executive vice president of external and legislative affairs wrote in an email.

"Verizon delivers video content at the resolution provided by the host service, whether that's Netflix or any other provider," a Verizon spokesman said.
