Netflix accounts for nearly 30% of US Internet traffic

According to a recent study of the network monitoring firm Sandvine, video-streaming service Netflix is the single largest consumer of bandwidth in the US. The study shows that Netflix movie and TV show streaming accounts for 29.7 percent of all North American Internet traffic at peak times.

"The dramatic growth of Netflix and its impending global expansion are prime examples of a growing appetite for real-time entertainment," Dave Caputo, president and CEO of Sandvine, said in a statement.

A recent report from Netflix itself shows that the company now has 23.6 million subscribers, with nearly 1 million new subscribers joining every month. The report also shows that a Netflix subscriber using an Xbox 360 (or another device capable of HD streaming) has about 80GB content consumption per month, which is about twice the content consumption of an average Netflix subscriber.
