The Mobile World Congress (MWC), one of the biggest trade shows of the year for smartphone makers and wireless carriers, was canceled on Wednesday amid fears over the coronavirus outbreak.
"The GSMA has canceled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event," John Hoffman, the CEO of organizer GSMA, said in a statement.
Multiple firms had pulled out of the tech conference prior to the GSMA's decision, putting pressure on the hosts to drop the event. LG, Sony, Ericsson, Nokia, Nvidia, Intel and Amazon are some of the biggest names to have suspended their attendance in recent days.
Coronavirus infections have exceeded 42,000 with the total number of deaths at more than 1,000. Most infections and deaths have been reported in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei Province in China, but at least 25 countries have now reported cases. The GSMA had tried to allay fears with increased disinfection measures on site, recommending attendees don't shake hands and even ban on visitors traveling from the province in China where coronavirus was first discovered.
