Microsoft unveiled its new Xbox One Tuesday, displaying a device that takes new steps in game consoles' journey to becoming all-purpose entertainment and communication devices. The new console will be available later this year and will replace the Xbox 360, which has been on the market for nearly eight years.

From a hardware standpoint, Xbox One has a custom-built 8-core CPU, with 8 gigabytes of RAM, a 500 gigabyte hard drive, USB 3.0, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a Blu-ray drive.

The controller has received some cosmetic changes to its exterior, adding a more precise joystick. The once removable battery is now fully integrated, but at its core, it offers the same game-playing experience it always has. The biggest change, aside from "new ergonomics," is a set of triggers that will provide vibration feedback.

As far as games are concerned, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One will not feature support for older titles, due to the Xbox One's 64-bit x86 architecture, which differs from the PowerPC-based Xenon processor found in the Xbox 360. Still, Microsoft intends to keep selling the Xbox 360 alongside the One, so it should be able to get some more mileage out of the best-selling console.
