Microsoft to permanently close all of its retail stores2020-06-26 17:42 by Daniela
Today the company announced plans to permanently close all Microsoft Store locations in the United States and around the world. Microsoft will instead focus on its online store at Microsoft.com, where customers can go for support, sales, training and more.
Flagship Microsoft Store locations, including stores in London, New York, Sydney and at the company's Redmond, Washington headquarters will become "Microsoft Experience Centers."
"Our sales have grown online as our product portfolio has evolved to largely digital offerings, and our talented team has proven success serving customers beyond any physical location," said Microsoft Corporate Vice President David Porter. "We are grateful to our Microsoft Store customers and we look forward to continuing to serve them online and with our retail sales team at Microsoft corporate locations."
All Microsoft Stores have been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company said that employees from the store locations will "continue to serve customers from Microsoft corporate facilities and remotely providing sales, training, and support."
Microsoft opened its first store in Scottsdale, Arizona in October 2009, eight years after Apple's first stores opened in Glendale, California and the Washington, D.C. area.
