Microsoft has launched a fresh volley in its battle to maintain its strength in the online arena, with the launch of a platform preview of Internet Explorer 9. At the company's MIX10 conference in Las Vegas, Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer at Microsoft, unveiled the new browser which includes expanded support for HTML5 and hardware-accelerated graphics and text. Also on display was a new JavaScript engine, which includes support for multi-core processors. As far as HTML5 goes, Microsoft has graciously conceded to several HTML5 specifications, including CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), XHTML parsing, and the video and audio tags using industry-standard (H.264/MPEG4 and MP3/AAC) codecs, among others. Now that the Vole no longer has the ability to automatically install Internet Explorer on every Windows PC, the company has to actually focus on making its browser at least as good at that of the competition.
