Microsoft hires former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman2023-11-20 16:35 by DanielaTags: Microsoft, OpenAI
Microsoft is hiring former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman. Altman was fired from OpenAI on Friday, after the board said it "no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI." After a weekend of negotiations to potentially bring Altman back to OpenAI, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that both Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will be joining to lead Microsoft's new advanced AI research team. Altman will have the CEO title of this new group. Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Amazon's streaming service Twitch, will join OpenAI as interim CEO. He replaces Mira Murati, who was named interim CEO when Altman was fired. She will return to her role as OpenAI's chief technology officer. "We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "And we're extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team." The developments come less than a year after OpenAI kicked off the generative AI frenzy with the launch of viral chatbot ChatGPT and bagged Microsoft as an investor, among other big names. The ousting of co-founder Altman as CEO by the OpenAI board on Friday was followed by efforts to reinstate him, amid concerns that his departure could lead to a mass exodus of talent and hit an upcoming $86 billion share sale. "We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote.
