Microsoft and Facebook's transatlantic cable completed2017-09-22 11:18 by DanielaTags: Microsoft, Facebook
Facebook, Microsoft and Telefonica subsidiary Telxius, have announced the completion of their joint project Marea - a 6,600 Km-long subsea cable connecting the US to the north of Spain. The cable spreads from from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to Bilbao in northern Spain. Called Marea, after the Spanish word for "tide", the subsea cable has data capacity of 160 terabits per second. It runs along a route just south of existing transatlantic cable systems and, because it’s physically separate from the other cables in the area, the amount of traffic flowing through it is reduced, giving it the potential to be more reliable. The trio began work on the cable in August last year and the speed of completion is said to be three times faster than typical subsea cable work. Marea won't be used in anger until "early 2018" and should run for decades afterwards, because while it contains just eight fibre pairs its landing stations can be upgraded to improve bandwidth.
